Ernest Bridge

Built 1938Howe Truss75 ft spanNRHP #03001059

Ernest Bridge is a 75-foot Howe truss covered bridge spanning the Mohawk River near Marcola in Lane County, Oregon. Built in 1938, it serves rural properties in the Mohawk River valley northeast of Springfield.

The bridge is characteristic of the smaller covered bridges built in Lane County during the late 1930s — compact, white-painted, and well-suited to the modest creek crossings that connected farms and homesteads in the foothills.

Ernest Bridge was one of several Mohawk River valley bridges constructed during the productive 1930s era of Lane County bridge building. The Marcola area's timber and agricultural economy required reliable creek crossings throughout the narrow valleys of the McKenzie foothills.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 as part of the statewide covered bridge nomination, the bridge has been maintained to preserve its historic character and continues to serve local traffic.
